Installation Addendum Faast-3 for PC-386 (and higher) Personal Computers, using Windows-NT4 Release 3.3M-WNx, August 30, 2001 (applicable to later releases until superseded) General: -------- This note discusses differences between installing and using Faast-3, release 3.3M-WNx on Windows-NT4 (as well as MS-Dos, Win-3, or Win-9x/XP) versus the non-NT4 versions (such as 3.3L-PCx). If you are using NT4, it is assumed that you are using Windows NT 4.0 Workstation. Other versions of NT4 may act differently. Before installing, read INSTALL.DOC which is the general installation and getting started document for PC releases of Faast-3. Installation for NT4: -------------------- 1. Generally install as for Windows-9x/XP. There is a separate .PIF file for NT4, called F3-NT.PIF. The following files should now reside on your hard disk directory: File Purpose --------------------------- *.CMD Various sample problem data files (if a new issue disk). DOS4GW.EXE Auxiliary program code file, F3-NT.PIF Windows-NT4 "Program Info File", F3CFG.CFG Sample custom configuration file (use is optional), F3HELP.HLP Help message text file (new with each release), F3LICENS.VAL Your company license validation file (Do not alter this file!), FAAST3.EXE Executable program image file, FAAST3.GRP Windows "Faast3 Group info file" (used by Windows-3 only), FAAST3.PIF Windows "Program Info File" (used by Windows-3 and -9x/XP), FCONVERT.EXE Binary file conversion program for Faast-3 save/recall files, FST3INST.EXE Compressed distribution library file, if copied to hard disk, INSTALL.DOC Non-NT4 installation information (may be viewed and/or printed), INSTALL.NT This file (which may be viewed with an editor and/or printed), PLOTIT.CFG Plotter driver configuration file, PLOTIT.EXE Plotter driver executable program file, PLOTIT.HLP Plotter driver help file, README.NOW Release notes and supplemental documentation. After installation, you should make the as-installed files "read-only" to avoid accidental erasure. Also, you should make backup copies on removable media. 2. F3-NT.PIF assumes you have installed FAAST3 in the drive/directory (folder) called C:\FAAST3 and if you use some other location, you must alter the drive/directory (folder) information as it appears in the .PIF file. To do this, use your mouse to select the .PIF file and generally follow the Win-9x/XP directions for editing the .PIF file by using the "File Properties" menu, not the PIF Editor as with Win-3. 3. Beginning with release 3.3J, the auxiliary code file called "DOS4GW.EXE" may reside in the same location (drive/directory/folder) as the Faast3 program file (FAAST3.EXE). It is no longer necessary to copy this file to a different directory. Installation & Getting Started Supplement, NT4, Page 2. 4. If using NT4 (and not Win-3 or -9x) you may optionally delete the files "FAAST3.GRP" and "FAAST3.PIF" which are not used by -NT4, and rename F3-NT.PIF as FAAST3.PIF or some other name. Running from NT4: ---------------- Generally run as with Windows-95/98/XP. Faast-3, release 3.3M, should be runable either from the DOS prompt ("Start" menu) or by clicking its icon. If you run from the DOS prompt, you may type a faast command (such as "read ") on the startup command line, for example: faast3 read project3 but if you run from an icon, you must manually enter the READ command after the Faast sign-on screen. When running from an icon, after execution the final messages will remain on screen in a reduced-size window, which you may close after reading. Monochrome graphics are not installed in release 3.3M-WNx. When requesting a display of files on disk by means of the DIR, CAT or LFN commands, and when not using the "FULL." option, some directory names might not align in vertical columns as well as file names align. Installation for Dos: --------------------- 1. Generally install as for other MS-Dos releases of Faast3. 2. We suggest you install FAAST3 in the drive/directory (folder) called C:\FAAST3 but if you need to use some other location, there is nothing to change. 3. Beginning with release 3.3J, the auxiliary code file called "DOS4GW.EXE" may reside in the same location (drive/directory/folder) as the Faast3 program file (FAAST3.EXE). It is no longer necessary to copy this file to a different directory. 4. You may delete the files FAAST3.GRP, FAAST3.PIF, and F3-NT.PIF which are not used by Dos. The following files should now reside on your hard disk directory: File Purpose --------------------------- *.CMD Various sample problem data files (if a new issue disk), DOS4GW.EXE Auxiliary program code file, F3CFG.CFG Sample custom configuration file (use is optional), F3HELP.HLP Help message text file (new with each release), F3LICENS.VAL Your company license validation file (Do not alter this file!), FAAST3.EXE Executable program image file, FCONVERT.EXE Binary file conversion program for Faast-3 save/recall files, FST3INST.EXE Compressed distribution library file, if copied to hard disk. INSTALL.DOC General install file (may be viewed and/or printed), INSTALL.NT This file (which may be viewed with an editor and/or printed), PLOTIT.CFG Plotter driver configuration file, PLOTIT.EXE Plotter driver executable program file, PLOTIT.HLP Plotter driver help file, README.NOW Release notes and supplemental documentation, Installation & Getting Started Supplement, NT4, Page 3. After installation, you should make the as-installed files "read-only" to avoid accidental erasure. Also, you should make backup copies on removable media. Running from Dos: ----------------- Generally run as for other releases. You may type a faast command (such as "read ") on the startup command line, for example: faast3 read project3 so as to begin problem solving session. When requesting a display of files on disk by means of the DIR, CAT or LFN commands, and when not using the "FULL." option, some directory names might not align in vertical columns as well as file names align. Monochrome graphics are not installed in release 3.3M-WNx. However, if you have a dual monitor system (one monochrome and one color) you may have text on monochrome and graphics on color by making the monochrome monitor your active, primary monitor before starting Faast. The DOS MODE command accomplishes this (type: mode mono at the DOS prompt), and Faast will maintain a steady graphics image while you enter commands after viewing. # # #
